Biological Effects of ionising radiation

This half day course covers the biological effects associated with radiation exposure. It puts radiation dose into perspective when compared with other risks and looks at the physical, chemical and biological processes that occur after a radiation exposure and that may result in cancer. Risks and risk estimates are put into perspective, using “real life” examples such as radiation exposure of critical groups such as Nagasaki and Hiroshima bomb victims. Deterministic effects of large doses of radiation are described, and practical examples are used to illustrate the course.

This is an excellent and interesting course for any person who wishes to gain a greater understanding of the effects of radiation exposure and dispel any myths that circulate today. It is taught in a way that any person can gain a good understanding from the course, even if they have no prior knowledge of radiation and radiological protection.
