This includes radon, and those encountered in industries working with naturally occurring radioactive materials, e.g. mining, oil industries etc. This course considers the radiation protection measures that need to be put into place for these sources.

Topics covered are, atoms and matter, radioactivity, different types of ionising radiation and properties and units of ionising radiation.

Background to NORM is provided, including the Sources of NORM, natural radioactive series, radionuclides of concern, natural uranium and thorium content of rocks, Variation with rock type, age of rocks, depth etc.
